Small Batch, Handcrafted Tequila for the True Connoisseur

An Unlikely Beginning for an Unforgettable Tequila

Suavecito Tequila was born from the unlikely combination of curiosity, circumstance, and innovation. The result was an unbelievably smooth spirit with a bold and complex flavor that will change how you think about tequila. We never intended to make tequila, but when we did, it could only be called Suavecito Tequila.

Suavecito Tequila Agave Farm in Jalisco

Driven by Curiosity

In 2002, Bill Foss, the owner and maker of Suavecito Tequila, visited the Mexican state of Jalisco to purchase an agave farm.

Having recently retired from his construction company, Bill wasn’t ready to sit back and take it easy. He still craved adventure and possessed the spirit to try something new. When encouraged by a friend from the region to start growing agave, Bill embraced the challenge and began his search to find the best land possible to cultivate his plants.

Interested in learning the most successful techniques for growing agave, Bill talked with Dr. Luis Ramirez, one of the country’s preeminent experts in agave cultivation. Dr. Ramirez shared with Bill that growing agave at higher elevations produced smaller piñas that are nearly 100% sugar, while agave grown in the lowlands is closer to 50% water. Highland-grown agave develops slowly, allowing more time for the plant to mature. Highland-grown agave creates a smoother spirit with slightly fruity and floral notes when made into tequila.

Created by Circumstance

Convinced that the Highlands of Central Mexico was where to start his farm, Bill hired Dr. Ramirez to help him grow his agave, which he planted at 7,000 feet.

Highlands grown agave takes years to develop and adequately mature. When the first agave crop was ready for harvest, the financial collapse of the American economy in 2008, brought on by the Great Recession, left Bill with nowhere to sell his agave. Rather than let his crop rot, the circumstances of the moment inspired him to make the most out of his agave, and a new tequila was born.

While Bill had never intended to make his own tequila, he was determined to create a boldly original spirit that honored tradition while forging its own path. With only 10% of the world’s tequila made from Highland-grown agave, Bill had the opportunity to craft a premium tequila unlike anything else on the market.

Born from Innovation

Bill learned that a longer barrel-rested aging process creates a smoother, more robust tequila.

So, instead of aging his Reposado for the required two months, Bill extended the aging process to 8 months. Rather than age in Añejo for one year like most other premium tequila brands, Bill elected to age it for two. Suavecito Tequila Extra Añejo is the ultimate expression of the additional aging and maturation process Bill embraced, as it’s aged it for five years rather than the required three.

Bill’s innovation didn’t stop there. He realized that by returning 2% unfermented agave nectar to his recipe, he could eliminate the burning sensation so familiar with other types of tequila. Yet, no other tequila maker had taken this bold step. So Bill did. And he created a tequila unlike any other. One so incredibly smooth and flavorful that you must try it to believe it.

A tequila this smooth could only be called one thing — Suavecito Tequila.

A Perfect Pairing

In a tale of serendipity and shared passion, Suavecito Tequila found its perfect partner in Destiladora Agave Azul.

This bond began when Jose Garcia, the owner of the third-generation distillery in the heart of San Juanito de Escobedo, discovered the unique taste of Suavecito Tequila. Instantly recognizing its exceptional quality, Jose reached out with a proposition that stemmed from admiration and respect.

His family, deeply rooted in the art of tequila making, wanted to invest in Suavecito. Jose’s only condition was to bring the creation of Suavecito under his family’s distillery, which Bill happily agreed to.

Today, along La Ruta del Tequila, a team of unparalleled skill works tirelessly to produce Suavecito Tequila. Among them is one of Mexico’s few female Chief Engineers, a trailblazer in her field who has risen through the ranks to master her craft. Her journey mirrors the spirit of Suavecito – one of growth, passion, and unrelenting excellence.

Under her expert guidance, and with a team dedicated to preserving tradition while embracing innovation, Suavecito Tequila’s remarkably smooth flavor is brought to life.

Destiladora Agave Azul is also distinguished by its Environmentally Responsible Agave (ARA) Certification, underscoring the distillery’s commitment to sustainable farming practices and biodiversity. This certification ensures that our agave cultivation processes contribute positively to our environmental footprint, emphasizing our dedication to the land and natural resources that make our tequila possible.

Together, Suavecito Tequila and Destiladora Agave Azul stand as proud stewards of the earth and tradition, crafting not just tequila but a legacy of environmental responsibility and unparalleled quality.
